WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THE Ministry of Natural RESOURCES

FIRST THINGS FIRST ... LET'S SHATTER THE MYTH THAT THE MNRF PROTECTS OUR WILDLIFE

Is hunting protection?  How about trapping?  Should we consider the cruelty of Penned Dog Hunting to be protective of our wildlife?  Maybe, they're protecting them while they conduct unnecessary animal research on them?

It's right in their name .. the Ministry of Natural Resources protects "RESOURCES".  Our wildlife is considered a "resource" to only one segment of our population, and that's hunters.  The resource therefore, is not the life of the animal or the animal itself ... but the flesh and the fur of the animal.

The MNRF panders to the Ontario Federation of Anglers & Hunters as well as the Ontario Sporting Dog Association.  Should we believe that these special interest groups hold the protection of raccoons, coyotes, fox or rabbits as a top priority?  Or would they be more concerned with the supply levels for their bloodsports?

HERE'S THE BIG QUESTION! ... Why then is the same agency that supports such perverse acts of animal cruelty, also charged with regulating Ontario's  Authorized Wildlife Custodians (Rehabbers) who have dedicated their lives to saving these very same animals?  THIS IS A CONFLICT OF INTEREST!

THEY HAVE HAD AN UNOFFICIAL CAMPAIGN OF HARASSMENT AGAINST OUR WILDLIFE REHABBERS FOR DECADES

2024 - the MNRF warn a Rehabber that if she does not stop providing animal care advice publicly, that they may revoke her license, even though the public is legally allowed to care for wildlife for up to 24 hours

2024 - the MNRF revokes their promise for an appeals process for Rehabbers, and instead says all decisions regarding licensing or revoking of licenses, as well as euthanasia orders for animals in care whether for rehabilitation purposes or previously authorized for educational purposes will be made behind closed doors without any Rehabber or other expert input

2023 - the MNRF's largest raid to date against Mally's Third Chance Raccoon Rescue, and with the largest death toll to-date (over 50 officers and MNRF representatives along with a convoy of trucks, multiple drones, a K-9 unit, and aerial support swarmed the facility and home where no more than 5 staff or employees are on site based on nothing more than 2 complaints from former disgruntled employees)

2023 - at least one MNRF staff member quit their position shortly after the MNRF raid on Mally's Third Chance Raccoon Rescue, but is ordered under a Non-Disclosure Agreement not to discuss the raid or their reasons for quitting

2004 - a large-scale raid against Ottawa-Carleton Wildlife Rescue where the MNRF used all seized raccoons in their rabies research project (which is an absolute death sentence as decapitation is the only means to test for rabies)

*Other details of harassment are shared in the News Stories below, and further details will be added shortly*

JUST HOW BIG IS THEIR BUDGET?

By our estimates, the Ministry of Natural Resources spent no less than $500,000 on the over-the-top, military-style raid on Ontario's largest raccoon rescue centre in September 2023, with the seizure of the raccoons, and their subsequently required daily care and housing needs for the 11.5 weeks they were in MNRF custody, before they killed them all.

For the raid on a family-run rescue facility with no more than 5 staff/volunteers present at any given time, the MNRF sent:

  • over 50 armed officers, research technicians, and representatives
  • a convoy of over 20 vehicles
  • multiple drones
  • a K-9 unit
  • and aerial support

The MNRF had porta-pottys and a catered lunch delivered to the site.

They transported the 87 seized raccoons an hour away in multiple vehicles.

The other expenses would include:

  • Housing and daily care requirements for up to 81 days
  • Medical assessments and veterinary care
  • Collection of lab samples
  • Analysis of lab samples
  • Euthanasia

WHO AUTHORIZED THIS MILITARY-STYLE RAID?

IF THE RISK WAS GREAT ENOUGH TO JUSTIFY THIS ACTION, THEY WHY DID THE MNRF NOT ACT IN ANY KIND OF CAPACITY UNTIL MORE THAN 9 MONTHS LATER?

HOW HAVE THEY JUSTIFIED IT, GIVEN THEY NEGLECTED TO PERFORM A SINGLE SITE VISIT IN OVER 18 MONTHS BEFORE THE RAID, AND HAD IN FACT JUST RENEWED THE CUSTODIAN'S LICENSE JUST A FEW MONTHS BEFORE THE RAID ... SEVERAL MONTHS AFTER THE COMPLAINTS?

HOW MUCH MONEY WAS ACTUALLY SPENT?

WHY DIDN'T THEY JUST TAKE LAB SAMPLES ON SITE, AND LEAVE THE RACCOONS WHERE THEY WERE OR RELOCATE THEM TO ANOTHER REHABILITATION FACILITY WHERE THEY COULD HAVE CONTINUED THEIR MUCH-NEEDED CARE?

WHY WERE RESEARCH TECHNICIANS INVOLVED IN WHAT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A SEARCH FOR EVIDENCE OF REGULATORY INFRACTIONS AS LAID OUT ON THE SEARCH WARRANT?

WE'LL BE PROVIDING VALID PLAUSIBLE ANSWERS TO SOME OF THESE QUESTIONS IN THE COMING WEEKS AS WE GATHER MORE INFORMATION, SO PLEASE CHECK BACK OR FOLLOW US ON FACEBOOK FOR REGULAR UPDATES.

IS THIS WHAT LEADERSHIP IN ONTARIO LOOKS LIKE?

ARE THESE THE PEOPLE WE WANT IN CHARGE OF HOW

WILDLIFE IS CARED FOR BY PRIVATE CITIZENS IN RESCUE CENTRES

THAT ARE 100% FUNDED BY PRIVATE DONATIONS?

Would you want them watching your pets?

So, why should they be watching our wildlife?
